The client had an ongoing problem with this Bull Nose as the vessels negotiating the dock used it as a Bow thruster to turn the tight corner of the dock. For a number of years the corner had been repaired several times per year. ABP asked ATC to look at a more permanent solution. With our design partners HBPW a design was agreed.
The design theory was to try and construct a substantial base to transmit the load from the vessels directly into the CBM construction of the quay. The works were detailed so that the works could be carried out above water level without the need for divers. With installation of steel faced Pre-cast Units the client would have flexibility and a more economic solution for replacement should they be damaged.
Unfortunately when the works began there was more damage to the corner than could originally be seen. This meant the whole corner to 1.5m below water level had to be reconstructed. In conjunction with ABP a solution was developed where a steel faced permanent shutter was installed. This meant that the works could be completed without divers.
ATC quickly reacted to the situation and turned around the additional works with only 1 weeks delay to the programme. The project was completed in December 07 – so far the detail is working well.
