ATC were involved in the design development from concept stage, through to delivery. The clients brief was to be able to load and unload two articulated lorry's at the same time in a safe manner using forklifts. The existing buildings would not accommodate dock levellers, so the only solution was to build a raised platform in the yard area, but without disrupting or affecting the movement of site traffic.
A budget was agreed and the design commenced in June 2009. The works were split into 2 phases, 6 weeks for the Dock Leveller structure and 4 weeks for the roof canopy, with completion due in August 2009. During this period, changes were made along with further improvements. The scope of work increased but ATC managed to incorporate savings so that the original budget was maintained.
The Dock leveller structure now has facilities for two hydraulic dock levelling platforms for unloading containers, with an approach ramp for counterbalance forklifts and additional concrete paved loading bay areas for articulated vehicles. The main structure is Reinforced Concrete with boot retaining walls. It has mass fill between the walls, which is then capped with RC slab. To the perimeter of the structure is a galvanised handrail and angle upstand for personnel/forklift edge protection. An area of hard standing concrete apron, ductwork and surface water drainage was also required to the approach of the Dock Leveller. After successful completion of the first phase, the second phase of this project was to cover the Dock Leveller for weather protection. A steel frame and cladding with 50% roof and wall lights was the chosen solution. Strategic cladding to the walls was either full length or 1m from eaves. This was to make the most economic solution but provide the required functionality. The canopy is also incorporated with lighting for 24 hour working when required.
This project was completed on time and within the budget.
