For this project ATC has teamed up with Bridgespan to provide the client with innovative solutions to enable them to complete the works. The Main Contract is to demolish and rebuild an RC bridge over the Calder and Hebble Navigation. This bridge is one of the main trunk roads to Halifax and must at least maintain one way traffic throughout the project. The demolition sequence is therefore critical to try and maintain traffic flow.
Bridgespan were involved from tender stage and worked with the client to understand the project requirements. They came up with an innovative design that would allow Carillion to transfer the traffic onto a temporary bridge to allow demolition of 50% of the existing bridge structure. The bridge will also support the existing bridge deck during the demolition and reconstruction phase.
Due to the unique connection detail of the bridge, ATC were able to install it in one day. The bridge will be on hire for approximately 16 weeks and then reduced to support beams for the services and bridge deck during the second phase demolition.
