For this project ATC teamed up with Bridgespan to provide the client with innovative solutions to enable them to complete the works. The Main Contract was to replace an existing road bridge that had become unsafe. The clients operations were not to be interrupted during the works and additionally there were Environmental considerations which had to be met, specifically that the flood plain should not be affected.
ATC worked for over 18 months on the project developing the scheme and negotiating with the Environment Agency (EA) to ensure that all the criteria was met. In October the Contract was finally awarded. Construction on Site commenced in January 2008 and was complete by the end of March. Easter was the critical date for the client, as this was when the golf season recommenced and the client wanted the construction work completed so that the grounds were in order.
The bridge was a multi-span composite deck simply supported on steelwork trestles with a total span of 48m. The main span over the River Mole was 22m. The site presented a number of obstacles ranging from restricted access – the site could only be accessed from one side by heavy traffic, to working around the existing established trees. ATC developed the design such that the bridge could be installed from one side and so that it spanned the roots of the trees whilst ensuring that there was no impact on any of the trees.
The works included Mini Piles, RC Foundations and Bankseats, Bridge Fabrication, Concrete composite deck and landscaping. The project was successfully completed in March 2008.
